Bésame Cake Mascara
Bésame Cosmetics might be best known for our long-lasting, distinctive Lip Color, but our Cake Mascara is arguably one of the most special products we sell.

A revival of a twentieth century beauty staple, our Cake Mascara is an instant time machine that transports you to the golden age of Hollywood and Prohibition –– it also happens to make your eyes look phenomenal.

The History Behind the Product
For the first half of the twentieth century, the most popular form of mascara was the cake or block type. Like its predecessors – water cosmetique and mascaro – cake mascara was packed in a small cardboard and/or metal box with a mirror and a tiny brush.

To apply the cake mascara, a wet brush was raked across the cake to pick up the color, which was then brushed onto the lashes.

Unlike today, water was not always readily available, so women most often used their own saliva to activate the product. It was common for women to either put the brush directly into their mouths, or spit onto the cake, which resulted in the product’s nickname of the time, “spit black.”
Why We Made It

Bésame founder and cosmetics historian, Gabriela Hernandez, was first inspired by the elaborate beauty regime of her grandmother, whom she observed while growing up in Buenos Aires. Shop 1935 Cherry
It’s these fond memories that pushed her to create vintage-inspired cosmetics with historical accuracy for a living.

Her mission is to restore a sense of glamour, anticipation, and ritual to cosmetics, in a culture so focused on instant gratification and convenience.
Shop 1941 Victory Red Makeup should be time well spent and relished, not a chore. Using cake mascara takes more time, skill, and care than modern mascara.
Carving out an extra few moments in your day to spend more time on yourself is important, and so are the products that help you achieve that sense of pride.

Additionally, makeup isn’t meant to change the way you look, but rather enhance your natural beauty. We believe less is more when it comes to products. A simple regime with a small amount of versatile, good quality tools is all you need.

We love our cake mascara for this reason because can be used as a mascara, eyeliner, and brow fill –– all in one tin.
1946 Red Velvet
Though it is also a shade from the 1940’s, 1946 Red Velvet is very different from Victory Red.

As the war came to a close, the world calmed down, and women were looking for more subdued, sophisticated shades as they settled back into everyday life.

It’s no surprise that this shade is the first lip color purchase for a lot of our customers.

Not to mention it’s Agent Carter’s red. So, if it’s good enough for Peggy, it’s definitely good enough for us!
