10 Things You Need To Know About SLEEPING BEAUTY: The 1959 Collection

1. The colors of the lipsticks are the REAL colors of the characters’ lips

Shop Sleeping Beauty Pink and Maleficent

The 1959 Sleeping Beauty collection contains three different lipstick shades that are brand new colors! Something that makes this collection really unique is that the colors are matched exactly with the real colors used as inks and paints in the original movie. So when creating the Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent lipsticks, Gabriela matched the shades perfectly to the colors of the characters’ lips in the film to be a perfect representation to the characters. You can now have the mischievous smirk of Maleficent or the kissable pout of Aurora!

2. The Make it Blue, Make it Pink lipstick combines magic and science

Remember in the movie, those finicky fairies couldn’t agree on the color of Aurora’s dress so they always changed it with their magic? The Make It Blue Make It Pink lipstick in this collection starts as blue in the tube but magically transforms to pink on your lips, as if with the magic powers of fairies! Well, it is actually a little more scientific than that. The lipstick chemically changes based on the pH balance of your lips, meaning that depending on your balance, it will create a unique color that perfectly matches YOU! Watch it transform from a light shimmery blue to a custom, rosy pink on your lips!

3. The vanity mirror was inspired by Aurora’s dress and her castle

Part of this collection includes a stunning, keepsake vanity hand mirror that is sure to amaze Disney fans. It’s gold-plated, heavy in your hand, and adorned with beautiful artwork! So where did this artwork come from? Gabriela says she based it off aspects of Aurora’s dress. Her royal dress has lots of lines and angles, and this mirror has shapes reminiscent of her bodice. As for the jewels and floral elements, Gabriela says the castle was the inspiration. The kingdom has a lot of jeweled decor with twisting vine-like patterns, and she wanted to use those elements for the back of the mirror’s design, surrounding the original logo.

4. The colors in the eyeshadow palette are all named after inks

One of the most impressive pieces of the collection is the Eyeshadow Palette, resembling the storybook from the movie and containing 20 different shadows in it. The names of the shades sound more like code names than colors… and that’s because they are named after the exact inks and paints they were based on! In the Disney archives, records are kept of all the original inks used to animate the film, and are sometimes labeled with a series of letters or numbers. Gabriela reviewed the entire color palette of the film and selected the most prominent shades to be a part of the Eyeshadow Palette. Since the shadows are an exact match to the inks, she kept the ink names to reference them.

5. This isn’t Bésame’s first time working with Disney

Maybe you’re a long time Bésame fan, or maybe you’re new and just discovering the brand because of the Sleeping Beauty collection! But did you know that Bésame has done other Disney collaborations? The first Bésame collection with Disney was in 2017 and was for the 80th anniversary of Snow White. After that, Bésame did two collections with Marvel: Agent Carter and Infinity War. Next, Bésame had the honor of releasing a special set for Mickey Mouse’s 90th Anniversary Celebration, and most recently released Peter Pan’s Mermaid Lagoon Collection! Sleeping Beauty is a new and exciting princess for Bésame, and was an honor to create a collection for her 60th Anniversary.

6. This collection took almost 2 years to produce

Bésame is known for makeup that is always intentionally crafted with research and authenticity to history, and doing a collection with Disney is no different! From concept to release, the Sleeping Beauty collection took over 18 months. Gabriela spent about 6 months of that time doing research for this collection, reviewing inks, paints, cels, drawings, and more! Looking at each piece, it’s clear the amount of detail and hard work that went into this collection.

7. The book from the beginning of the film is a real book, and it’s huge

The beautiful Eyeshadow Palette from this collection has a cover which resembles the book from the very beginning of the original 1959 film, telling the story of Sleeping Beauty. But did you know that the movie’s book wasn’t animated? It was actually a real-life prop which they filmed! To accurately capture the beautiful detail of the ornate book cover, the book was created oversized to use in filming. When Gabriela had the chance to view it in the Disney archives, she was blown away! She said it was about 3.5 feet by 2 feet in size, and the color was more silvery than she expected (since lighting in the film made the book appear more golden). She studied it carefully to accurately match our palette to be as true as possible to the original book.

8. The artwork on the translucent powder lid is special and rare

During her research, Gabriela pulls references from anywhere she can. An example of this can be found on the lid on Aurora’s Translucent Powder. Does she look a little different here than she does in the film? That’s because this artwork actually came from a coloring book, made in 1959! Gabriela thought the artwork was so sweet that she wanted to use it for this item’s packaging. If you stopped by the Bésame booth at D23 Expo, you may have noticed this special artwork on the bag you received, too!

9. The artwork on the lid of the blush palette is ALSO special and rare

Shop Briar Rose Blush Palette

Many incredible artists worked to create Disney’s Sleeping Beauty in the 1950s, but one artist in particular stood out as an inspiration for Gabriela: Eyvind Earle. Earle created the beautiful background images used in the film that make it one-of-a-kind. His stylistic approach of geometric designs not only gave a unique look to the film but also represented design trends of the late 1950s. When creating his backgrounds for the film, he actually painted them on boards. Then, the artists would ink the characters onto clear film cels and overlay the cel on his background painting to create the scene. One of these original, rare paintings by Eyvind Earle was used for the lid of the Briar Rose Blush Palette. Then to replicate the idea of the film cel animation process, a plastic clear piece with the silhouette of Briar Rose and her forest friends in rose gold was put over the background image, just like they would have done to create the movie!

10. The cream rouge in the Locket is a Bésame-specialty formula!

If you’re new to using cream rouge, this is a great starting point for you! Bésame has created a creamy, lightweight rouge formula that blends easily into the cheeks with your fingertips. Women of the 1950s wore cream rouge, making this formula very authentic to the 1959 collection. It can also be applied to the lips for a matching shade of pout-and-cheeks! Bésame has two beloved shades of cream rouge (Crimson and Apricot) in our line already, but this shade is unique to this collection. Gabriela has not created a piece like this locket necklace before for a collection, making it a first of its kind. Her idea was that is can be worn for easy application and a lovely accessory, and then when you finish your rouge, you can keep a picture in it that you wish to keep near to your heart.

The best of the two loves of my life! Vintage and Disney! I have every single item Besame Cosmetics offers in my makeup 💄 collection and I love Disney. I have a Disney podcast and talk about Besame Cosmetics often on there. Especially around Dapper Days. I love her booth at Dapper Days and the panels she has done. Gabriella is a genius and I am so grateful for what she has done!

I absolutely love this collection. I got to preview it last month at the D23 expo and had to leave with something. The maleficent lipstick shade is no nice and worked for all skin tones. The mirror is a must have, it’s well made and beautiful.

To say that I am excited is a complete understatement! For YEARS now I have been waiting for a company to do Sleeping Beauty. Out of all the Disney Princesses she always gets left out when it comes to cosmetics.
So, as soon as I found out that this was coming out, I made SURE to set my alarm so that I could be one of the first to order! The page itself wasn’t even updated to display it, so I had to use the search tool!
Thank you Besame for bringing the beauty of Sleeping Beauty to us! It is quite obvious that the care, and research that you put in was done with much care.
I cannot wait till I am able to have the whole collection, but 6 out of 8 so far is not bad ;-) Soon I will have the remaining two!
BTW…. who else whipped out their copy of Sleeping Beauty to watch?!

Thank you once again!

I will be in tears again when I get this, I just know it…I was so emotionally moved by the intricate work on the Snow White Collection, especially when I saw the storybook palette for the first time…I literally cried, as I had NEVER seen a make-up product before that was made with so much love and care for detail. Gabriela Hernandez is a real artist when it comes to her creations…she makes the dreams come true that we had when we were little girls. THANK YOU EVER SO!!!
